Sandals resorts have an almost cult-like following, and I completely understand why. When it is right, a Sandals trip is one of the best vacations you will ever take. The all-inclusive luxury, the Caribbean settings, the level of detail in the experience. It earns every bit of the reputation.
But "right" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. With more than seventeen properties across seven Caribbean islands, wildly different room categories, and more fine print than most people expect, the difference between a dream trip and a disappointing one often comes down to what you knew before you booked.
Here is what you actually need to know.
Sandals Is Adults-Only, and Beaches Is for Families
This comes up constantly, and it matters enough to say clearly. Sandals resorts are for adults only, minimum age eighteen, couples-focused at most properties. If you are traveling with children, Sandals is not your resort brand. Beaches is.
Beaches is Sandals' sister brand designed specifically for families, with three properties in Turks and Caicos, Negril, and Ocho Rios in Jamaica. It is an incredible option for families and I love placing clients there. But if you book a Sandals resort and plan to bring the kids, you will be turned away at check-in. Please do not let that be your story.
Not All Sandals Properties Are the Same
This is the one that matters most to get right.
Sandals has properties ranging from intimate boutiques to sprawling resort complexes. Some are on stunning private beaches. Some are on busier, more public stretches of coast. Some have a lively, social atmosphere with music and energy. Some are quiet and romantic and feel like a private retreat. Some have been recently renovated and feel fresh. Others are showing their age.
The Jamaica portfolio alone is dramatically varied. Sandals Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios is small, ultra-intimate, and butler-service-only, and it is one of the most romantic properties in the entire collection. Sandals Montego Bay is centrally located, social, and popular, but it sits right at the airport, which means you will hear planes. Sandals Negril sits on a stretch of the famous seven-mile beach and has a more laid-back, unwind-and-do-nothing vibe. Sandals Ochi is large and complex, with multiple villages and more amenities than you can explore in a week.
In Barbados, Sandals Barbados and Sandals Royal Barbados are two connected properties, which means guests access double the facilities. It is one of the more popular choices for first-time Sandals visitors and for good reason. In St. Lucia, the view from Sandals Grande St. Lucian is dramatic and extraordinary. In Turks and Caicos, the water is some of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.
The point is: you should not just book a Sandals. You should book the right Sandals for your specific trip.
Room Categories Matter More Than Most People Realize
Sandals properties typically have fifteen to twenty-five or more room categories per resort. The price difference between the lowest and highest category can be several thousand dollars per couple.
Butler service is only available at the higher-tier room categories. If you want someone to arrange reservations, set up your beach chairs, and take care of every little detail throughout your stay, you need to book accordingly. Swim-up rooms do not all access the same pool. Some categories face a quiet private pool. Others open onto the main resort pool, which is a different experience entirely. Overwater bungalows are available at select properties only.
Before you book, know exactly what your room category includes and what it does not. The photos on the website can be beautiful and completely accurate while still not showing you the full picture of what life in that room actually looks like.
All-Inclusive Does Not Mean Everything Is Included
Sandals includes a remarkable amount: food at all restaurants, bar service including premium spirits, water sports equipment, fitness center access, entertainment, and more. It is genuinely comprehensive compared to most competitors.
But a few things carry an additional cost. Off-resort excursions are not included in the resort rate. Spa services are a la carte. PADI scuba diving is included for certified divers, but certification courses cost extra. And while many Sandals properties allow you to dine at nearby sister resorts as part of the included experience, not all of them offer this.
Read the inclusions list before you book and make sure you understand where your spending will happen beyond the resort rate. A good travel advisor will walk you through all of this before you commit to anything.
Promotions Are Real, But They Come and Go
Sandals runs frequent promotions: complimentary nights, room upgrades, free airport transfers, spa credits. These are legitimate and can add real value to your booking. They are also tied to specific booking windows and travel date ranges, and they change regularly.
A travel advisor who specializes in Sandals will stay on top of these promotions and make sure you are getting the best available offer at the time you book. In many cases, they can also add value through preferred agency programs that are not available when you book directly through the resort website.
Why Booking Sandals With a Specialist Matters
Sandals has a certified travel agent program for a reason. The properties are complex, the room categories are numerous, and the right booking makes an enormous difference in your experience. A Sandals-certified specialist knows which properties have been recently renovated, which rooms have the best value at each tier, which resort suits the experience you are actually trying to create, and which add-ons are worth pursuing.
Beyond the knowledge, a specialist can often layer on perks you would not get booking direct. And if anything needs to be addressed while you are on property, you have someone on the other end of the phone who knows your booking and can help.
If you are considering Sandals and want to make sure you get it right, I would love to be that person for you. Schedule a free consultation and let's figure out which property and which room is the right match.
