Your Expert Costa Rica Travel Advisor

Costa Rica is not a resort-and-relax destination. It's a place where your family actually does things — where your kids spot a sloth in the wild for the first time, conquer a zip-line above the cloud forest, and come home with stories that matter. But planning that kind of trip? It takes more than a Google search.

I'm Erika Griffin, founder of Espoke Travel and a certified travel advisor who specializes in adventure family vacations — including Costa Rica. I've spent years learning this destination: which regions are right for which family styles, which lodges genuinely deliver on the eco-experience, and how to build an itinerary that's exciting without running your family ragged.

My job is to hand you a trip where everything is figured out — and your only job is to look up and notice how happy your kids are.

Why Families Choose Costa Rica

Costa Rica packs more natural wonder per square mile than almost anywhere on earth. Families come for the adventure, but they come back for the feeling: a slower pace, genuine connection with nature, and kids who are genuinely unplugged for the first time in months.

  • Unmatched wildlife — Costa Rica is home to 5% of the world's biodiversity. Sloths, howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, sea turtles, caimans, and hundreds of species of birds — all visible without a safari vehicle, just good eyes and the right guide.

  • Adventure for every age — Whether your kids are 6 or 16, there is a version of Costa Rica perfectly dialed for them. Beginner-friendly zip-lines for younger kids. White-water rafting for teenagers. Hot spring soaks for the adults who need to decompress.

  • World-class eco-lodges — Costa Rica pioneered eco-tourism, and the lodge options range from treehouse-style rainforest retreats to family-friendly Pacific beach resorts with surf lessons, wildlife tours, and exceptional food.

  • Pura vida culture — Costa Ricans genuinely love welcoming families. The culture is warm, safe, and family-forward. Kids are celebrated here.

Costa Rica Regions — Where to Take Your Family

One of the most common mistakes families make when planning a Costa Rica vacation is trying to see everything. Costa Rica is small on a map, but the roads are slow and the transfers are longer than they look. A great itinerary means choosing the right two or three regions and going deep — not checking every box.

Guanacaste — The Sunshine Coast

Guanacaste (also called the Gold Coast) is Costa Rica's driest, sunniest region — making it the most reliable for beach vacations. Families find large resort options here alongside boutique properties, beautiful Pacific beaches, and easy access to world-class surf breaks. The Papagayo Peninsula is home to several luxury all-inclusive properties ideal for families who want adventure with resort-level comfort.

Arenal — Volcanoes & Cloud Forest Adventure

The Arenal region is the adventure capital of Costa Rica. Arenal Volcano provides a dramatic backdrop for everything happening here: zip-lines over the jungle canopy, natural hot springs fed by geothermal activity, white-water rafting on the Sarapiquí River, hanging bridge walks through primary rainforest, and kayaking on Lake Arenal. Kids go absolutely wild for this region.

Manuel Antonio — Wildlife Meets Beachfront

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of Costa Rica's most visited — and for good reason. It combines a stunning national park (with monkeys, sloths, and iguanas visible right on the beach trails) with a gorgeous stretch of Pacific coastline. This is the trip where your family has breakfast watching a capuchin monkey in the tree outside the window.

Monteverde — The Cloud Forest Experience

Monteverde sits high in the mountains — literally inside the clouds — and it's one of the most otherworldly places your family will ever visit. This is Costa Rica's birthplace of zip-lining, and the canopy tours here remain some of the most spectacular in the world. If your family has naturalists or science-minded kids, Monteverde is non-negotiable.

Costa Rica Family Adventures — What We'll Plan for You

When I plan a Costa Rica family vacation, I don't just book flights and a hotel. I build an experience. That includes:

  • Zip-lining & canopy tours — I know the operators with the best safety records, the most spectacular routes, and guides who are exceptional with kids of all ages and confidence levels.

  • Private or small-group wildlife tours — Skip the crowded group tours. Private naturalist guides create a completely different experience — slower, more personal, and far better for spotting wildlife.

  • Volcano hiking & hot springs — Evening soaks in geothermal hot springs with a volcano towering above you is one of Costa Rica's signature experiences. I know which hot springs are actually worth it (and which are overpriced tourist traps).

  • Sea turtle nesting tours — Seasonal, unforgettable, and one of those childhood moments that lasts a lifetime. I plan around the right season and the best operators for responsible wildlife viewing.

  • White-water rafting — Costa Rica has some of the best family-friendly rapids in the world. I match the difficulty to your family's experience level.

  • Surf lessons — Beaches like Tamarindo and Playa Sámara have gentle breaks perfect for first-time surfers of all ages.

  • Private ground transportation — Costa Rica's roads require good drivers and local knowledge. I arrange reliable, vetted private transfers so your family isn't at the mercy of sketchy shuttles or confusing routes.

  • Eco-lodge & resort booking — I know which lodges genuinely deliver on the family experience versus which ones just photograph well.

Sample Costa Rica Family Itinerary

Every trip I plan is custom, but here's an example of how I might structure an 8-day Costa Rica family adventure for a family with kids ages 8–14:

Days 1–2
Arrive in Guanacaste

Settle in, beach afternoon, welcome dinner. First morning: guided wildlife walk on the resort grounds or nearby estuary.

Days 3–4
Transfer to Arenal

Afternoon arrival, evening hot springs. Full adventure day: zip-lining in the morning, hanging bridges walk in the afternoon, family dinner with volcano views.

Day 5
Arenal Activities

White-water rafting on the Sarapiquí or kayaking on Lake Arenal. Optional: ATV tour through jungle roads.

Days 6–7
Monteverde Cloud Forest

Morning in the biological reserve with a private naturalist guide. Afternoon canopy tour. Night hike to spot tree frogs and other nocturnal wildlife.

Day 8
Return & Fly Home

Scenic drive back to Liberia (GUA) or San José (SJO), departure flight home.

Want a longer trip? We add days in Manuel Antonio or the Osa Peninsula. Prefer more beach time? We weight toward Guanacaste with a 2–3 day Arenal excursion. It's all built around your family.

Why Plan Your Costa Rica Trip with Espoke Travel

I've seen the difference between a Costa Rica trip that's well-planned and one that isn't. The poorly planned version involves three-hour transfers that turn into six hours, guides who don't speak enough English to teach your kids anything, lodges that looked great online but smelled like mildew in person.

The Espoke Travel version is the one where everything works. Where your kids spend the drive to Arenal counting monkeys out the window instead of asking if the WiFi is good. Where the guide on your wildlife tour knows your daughter is obsessed with frogs and makes sure she sees the red-eyed tree frog. Where you get back to your lodge and a cold drink appears before you even ask.

That's what concierge travel planning actually means — and that's what I do for every family I work with.

Costa Rica Vacation Planning for Every Family

I specialize in building Costa Rica trips for:

  • Families with kids of mixed ages — from young children to teenagers

  • Multigenerational groups — grandparents, parents, and kids together

  • First-time international family travelers

  • Adventure-seeking families who want to do more than sit by a pool

  • Homeschool families incorporating nature and science education into the trip

  • Milestone trips — big birthdays, graduations, family reunion adventures
