One of the most common mistakes families make when planning a Costa Rica vacation is trying to see everything. Costa Rica is small on a map, but the roads are slow and the transfers are longer than they look. A great itinerary means choosing the right two or three regions and going deep — not checking every box.
Guanacaste — The Sunshine Coast
Guanacaste (also called the Gold Coast) is Costa Rica's driest, sunniest region — making it the most reliable for beach vacations. Families find large resort options here alongside boutique properties, beautiful Pacific beaches, and easy access to world-class surf breaks. The Papagayo Peninsula is home to several luxury all-inclusive properties ideal for families who want adventure with resort-level comfort.
Arenal — Volcanoes & Cloud Forest Adventure
The Arenal region is the adventure capital of Costa Rica. Monteverde — The Cloud Forest Experience
Monteverde sits high in the mountains — literally inside the clouds — and it's one of the most otherworldly places your family will ever visit. This is Costa Rica's birthplace of zip-lining, and the canopy tours here remain some of the most spectacular in the world. Sample Costa Rica Family Itinerary
Every trip I plan is custom, but here's an example of how I might structure an 8-day Costa Rica family adventure for a family with kids ages 8–14:
Settle in, beach afternoon, welcome dinner. First morning: guided wildlife walk on the resort grounds or nearby estuary.
Afternoon arrival, evening hot springs. Full adventure day: zip-lining in the morning, hanging bridges walk in the afternoon, family dinner with volcano views.
White-water rafting on the Sarapiquí or kayaking on Lake Arenal. Optional: ATV tour through jungle roads.
Morning in the biological reserve with a private naturalist guide. Afternoon canopy tour. Night hike to spot tree frogs and other nocturnal wildlife.
Scenic drive back to Liberia (GUA) or San José (SJO), departure flight home.
Want a longer trip? We add days in Manuel Antonio or the Osa Peninsula. Prefer more beach time? We weight toward Guanacaste with a 2–3 day Arenal excursion. It's all built around your family.
